The game against Fairisle was a difficult game against a good side. They put Newlands under a lot of pressure from the off. Fairisle’s link up play was difficult to defend against. They were shifting the ball from either side of the pitch, creating space with ease as the Newlands midfield chased shadows. The defence stood resolute. Newlands battled hard putting in some great tackles and for a time it looked like the defence could take it in to half time 0-0. The attacking pressure took its toll. Newlands sat deeper and couldn’t break out of their third of the pitch. After some great 2 touch link up play from Fairisle, they carved open a great chance which they could slot beyond the Newlands goalkeeper and in to the goal. The mental challenge of putting up with this pressure meant the team started to become fatigued and left space and moved out of position allowing Fairisle to capitalise. Newlands tried their best to keep it together and kept going even after Fairisle scored a few more. Today unfortunately we were outplayed by a better team but it showed us what area of Newlands game we need to work on and the team were brilliant to find the positives going forward on this game which we learnt a lot from.
