Newlands vs Shirley Warren

The first of 2 fixtures for Newlands resulted in a 1-0 victory. Newlands applied attacking pressure from the kick-off with a majority of the play occurring in Shirley Warren’s half. This almost paid off immediately when Josh received the ball in the box and his shot was deflected over the outrushing keepers head and onto the bar. Newlands continued to threaten as shortly after George hit the post. The breakthrough came not long after with a delicate through-ball from George fell into Josh’s feet, he was able to skilfully take it around the goalkeeper and coolly place it into an empty net. Shirley Warren threatened more in the 2nd half with some quick counter attacks but a strong defensive performance from Jack and Shay making some well-timed challenges and Benji mopping up any over hit passes and catching every cross that threated the Newlands goal maintained the clean sheet.

Newlands vs Portswood

The 2nd fixture of the afternoon resulted in a 0-0 draw with Portswood. However Newlands took control of this game dominating in territory, shots and possession. Dylan and Louie were dominant in midfield, winning the ball back high up the pitch and immediately either running past defenders or playing some key passes. A threatening run diagonally across the pitch from George resulted in a foul from the opposition however the ball continued to run through to Josh and a wonderful call from the referee allowed play to continue. Josh was through on goal with just the keeper to beat he chipped it over the diving keeper just missing the post by a fraction. Newlands were to come even closer in the 2nd half with a corner from the right side dangerously whipped in which was met by Josh’s right foot. It crashed against the underside of the bar and bounced down onto the line and was cleared. Another solid all round performance from every player on the pitch from attack through to defence where regularly gained possession from the opposition and was effective in his passes from the back to release the midfield.
