Newlands School took part in a citywide initiative to inform the City Council and other stakeholders about young people's views about Southampton and it's future.
Six children from Year 6 represented Newlands on the 'Imagine the Future' event held on board Red Funnel's newly upgraded Red Osprey. The special sailing took the children out into the Solent and along the North Coast of the Isle of Wight.
Workshops were held on; Jobs, Education, Health and Wellbeing and Civic Pride.
Another fantastic day of sport, this time for our younger pupils.
The children were again really motivated and enjoyed the variety of throwing and jumping activities in the morning.
After a picnic lunch in the shade at the front of the school, the afternoon races were held on the running track.
The results of today's events were;
1st Virtus 1 with 41 points
2nd Audacia 1 with 34 points
3rd were Celeritas with 30 points
These will be put together with the results of Monday's events and final results will be announced on Friday at celebration assembly.
The rain stayed away and we had a fantastic day of family fun and sports. The children spent the morning doing a circuit of field events, throwing and jumping. They worked in house teams and all the children were all engaged in the activities.
After a family picnic lunch, the afternoon continued with running races for the four years. We witnessed some very close finishes and ather races where the winner made it all look effortless.
In the end the day's result was
Joint 3rd Audacia 1 and Virtus 2
2nd Sophia 1
Joint 1st Celeritas 2 and Sophia 2
On Monday KS1 have their sports day and the results of this will be added to today's scores.
Many thanks to Mr Harris and Mr Butterworth for superb organisation and delivery of such a fun day.
Also thanks to all the parents who turned out to support the children.
As part of Women in Engineering Day, Selex - ES invited 20 of the girls from Year 6 and Year 5 to join them at their factory in Millbrook for an exciting day of engineering challenges.
Selex-ES produce a number of high tech pieces of equipment for defence and other organisations. They have a number of facilities in the UK and employ over 70000 people in this country alone.
After clearing security we were taken to the room where the children were given a number of challenges related to engineering and code cracking.
The code messages were quickly solved and then the girls embarked on the two practical challenges; Building a parachute and container for an egg and after lunch designing and building a balloon powered buggy.
As can be seen from the photos below, our pupils rose well to the challenges provided and came away with a positive impression of engineering as fun and interesting.
Many thanks to Amy and Selex SE for this wonderful opportunity.
Congratulations to the Newlands Primary School Athletics Team.

15 lucky year 5s have had the opportunity to experience sailing on the River Itchen. They have kitted up in wet suits, water proof jackets, buoyance aids and helmets and jumped in 2 person sail boats. They have learnt to steer and turn the boats through buoys and around each other. The pupils have loved the experience and have even featured in the echo as part of their article concerning ABP sailing in Southampton.
