Design Technology at Newlands
Primary School
Intent:
At Newlands Primary school, we aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced curriculum, which prepares them for life beyond primary education. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Newlands, the Design and Technology curriculum combines skills, knowledge, concepts and values to enable children to tackle real problems. It can improve analysis, problem solving, practical capability, editing and evaluation skills.
We aim to, wherever possible, establish cross-curricular links with English, mathematics, science, computing and art. The children are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. Children design products with a purpose in mind and an intended user of the products. Food technology is implemented across the school each term, with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare this.
Through Design and Technology, we foster a love of learning, the chance for all children to be creative and use their practical skills as well as those of design and evaluation. The topics we have carefully chosen inspire our children to want to learn new skills and reach for the stars as they create products that are both aesthetically pleasing and technically clever.
