School Closure - Thursday 4th July - General Election Polling Station

School Closure – Thursday 4th July 2024

Newlands Primary – UK Parliamentary Election Polling Station

Dear Parents/Carers

As you will be aware, it has now been announced that a snap General Election will take place on Thursday 4th July 2024 and I am writing to advise that I have been informed by Southampton City Council that Newlands Primary School will be required as a polling station on this date.

This means that the school will be closed to children and staff on Thursday 4th July.

They are expecting a higher turnout of voters than at the local elections and with this amount of the public visiting the school site, the health and safety of the children is the primary factor for making this decision. Unfortunately, the law states that ‘Returning Officer has a right by law to make use of any school premises for the purpose of an election/referendum.’ Therefore, I am unable to refuse the request.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope that the good notice of this date will enable parents/carers to make alternative arrangements for their children on that date. The ‘Home Learning’ section of the school website is full of activities they can opt to do at home if they wish.

Many thanks for your continued support.
