Women in Engineering

To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, the Year 6 girls from Newlands were invited to attend a day of activities at the local  factory of Leonardo UK. This company design and make cameras and visual surveillance devices for the defence and other applications.

The girls were able to see one of the thermal imaging camera worth £25000 and had their photos taken with prints to take home.

After a tour of the facility, they enjoyed two workshops run by the Smallpeice Trust; they designed a parachute to land an egg safely when dropped from an outside staircase. In the afternoon, they designed, built and tested small, air-powered rockets.

The girls had a great time and left with a very positive vision of what being an engineer might be like. They met a number of female engineers and apprentices who work at Leonardos.

Our thanks to Leonardo UK who arranged and sponsored they day.
