  • Asda Cashpot for Schools

Mon 09 Sep 2024 Mrs Mellor

We’ve got some exciting news to share with you.

Parentkind – a charity that supports school fundraising - have teamed up with Asda, who is making millions of pounds available to donate to primary schools across the UK through their ‘Cashpot for Schools’ initiative. To support our school, all you have to do is opt-in through the Asda Rewards app, shop and scan in store or shop online at Asda.com.

Between 2nd September and 30th November 2024 – every time you shop with Asda using your Asda Rewards app, Asda will donate 0.5% of the value of your shop to your chosen Primary school. Also, every time somebody opts-in to support our Primary school, Asda will give an additional £1 to the school Cashpot. Plus, it doesn’t stop there – Asda are also giving £50 to every school to get them started.

The supermarket has joined forces with Joe Wicks to support the initiative – look out for the TV advert, radio ads and social media coverage!

    It’s as easy as 1,2,3

    1. Download the Asda Rewards app, register and opt-in to Cashpot for Schools (make sure you have the latest version of the app installed)

    2. Choose our Primary School – either searching by name or postcode (SO16 9QX)

    3. Shop instore across Asda and George, or online at Asda.com and start filling your Cashpot as you shop

Asda does the rest, all money raised will be donated to schools to spend on the things they need the most.

Remember, anyone can sign up – so start spreading the news and raising funds for our school.

This initiative is on top of the existing Asda Rewards benefits you get as a shopper – so you won’t lose out on any of your own earnings or Cashpot, so everyone is a winner!

  • School Closure - Thursday 4th July - General Election Polling Station

Fri 07 Jun 2024 Mrs Mellor

    School Closure – Thursday 4th July 2024

Newlands Primary – UK Parliamentary Election Polling Station

    Dear Parents/Carers

As you will be aware, it has now been announced that a snap General Election will take place on Thursday 4th July 2024 and I am writing to advise that I have been informed by Southampton City Council that Newlands Primary School will be required as a polling station on this date.

This means that the school will be closed to children and staff on Thursday 4th July.

They are expecting a higher turnout of voters than at the local elections and with this amount of the public visiting the school site, the health and safety of the children is the primary factor for making this decision. Unfortunately, the law states that ‘Returning Officer has a right by law to make use of any school premises for the purpose of an election/referendum.’ Therefore, I am unable to refuse the request.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope that the good notice of this date will enable parents/carers to make alternative arrangements for their children on that date. The ‘Home Learning’ section of the school website is full of activities they can opt to do at home if they wish.

Many thanks for your continued support.

  • An OFSTED GOOD school!

Fri 26 Apr 2024 Mrs Mellor

We are delighted to share that the final report from our recent Ofsted Inspection has now been published. The two day inspection was a Section 8 Monitoring Visit of a good school and the HMI agreed that we remain a GOOD school! This is now our third ‘Good’ Ofsted in a row…a hat trick!

The report captures the essence of Newlands and recognises the great work of everyone in ensuring the children have the best education we can offer.

    Particular highlights include:

 Pupils feel proud to belong to this school.

 Pupils appreciate the kind, caring nature of staff and their peers.

 The vision of ‘no child left behind’ is at the centre of the school’s highly inclusive work.

 Pupils behave well. They are responsible and considerate of each other.

 Pupils feel safe and happy. They value the support that they receive from adults when they need it.

 Staff teach the school’s chosen phonics programme well.

 Overall, pupils make very good progress with their early reading.

 Teachers provide significantly effective opportunities for pupils to develop their language and mathematical skills.

 Staff teach pupils valuable knowledge, skills and vocabulary in all other subjects.

 The school makes sure that disadvantaged pupils get the right support to achieve well.

 The school identifies the needs of pupils with SEND early and precisely.

 Through the school, pupils develop a camaraderie.

 Pupils feel confident to speak to trusted adults or use the ‘worry boxes’ to raise any concerns they might have.

 Pupils flourish in their various roles and responsibilities.

 The school’s understanding of the community helps pupils be ready for their next stages in development.

 The quality of education continually improves.

 A happy staff team whose members feel supported and proud to work at the school.

 Parents and carers are very positive about the school.

  • Global Ambassador's Newsletter March 2024

Mon 15 Apr 2024 Global Ambassadors

    GLOBAL AMBASSADORS’ NEWSLETTER

    March 2024

At Newlands, we have 9 Global Ambassadors – one for each class in Key Stage 2 and one to represent the classes in Key Stage One. We have decided that we would like to create a newsletter to share with you some of the initiatives we have been working on this year.

Newlands Primary School has been a School of Sanctuary since 2018 and we have recently renewed our accreditation. This means that we are a school that welcomes and includes everyone. Sanctuary means safety and this means that we are school that offers safety to everyone in our community. This could be people who have troubles at home, whose lives were in danger in their own country or who are just looking for a place of safety.

What does a Global Ambassador do?

We promote Global Citizenship. We know that what happens in the world has an impact on us, but also, that what we do in Newlands has an impact on the rest of the world. We meet with the Global Citizenship Leader (Mrs Jones) every half term and decide what we would like to focus on. We also take part in a whole school assembly every term.

    Key Definitions

Migrant: A person who has moved to live in another country

Refugee: A person who has had to leave their country of nationality for fear of being persecuted because of their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular group or political opinion.

Asylum Seeker: A person who has asked the Government for refugee status but is waiting to hear the outcome of their application.

Internally Displaced: A person who had to leave their home because it is not safe, however, they are still within their original country.

    Charities that we work with:

The Hope School, Jordan – they work with refugees, mainly from Syria, providing education to children.

SWVG (Southampton and Winchester Visitor’s Group) – they support refugees and asylum seekers living in Southampton. We have had workshops with volunteers from this group and visits from people of lived experience of being a refugee – having to leave their homes because their lives were at risk.
