  • Eco team visit National Oceanography Centre

    Wed 15 Feb 2017

Next to Dock Gate 4 in Southampton lies the National Oceanography Centre. This important organisation is responsible for studying all aspects of the World's Oceans.

Newlands were invited to send 30 children from Years 5 and 6 to find out more about climate change and what can be done to minimise global warming. The children were able to hear from PHD students and staff at the centre about the problem and how changes were being monitored. They were then encouraged to think about their own carbon footprint and things that they could do to minimise the impact.

The children were sent off to think about what the ideal Eco School would look like.

The children were fantastic ambassadors for the school, they showed a great awareness of the issues and identified things they were already doing and other ideas that they could suggest.

  • Safer Internet Day

    Tue 07 Feb 2017

Tomorrow is Safer Internet Day and along with all the schools in the Redbridge and Lordshill Federation, as well as schools all over the World, Newlands children will be taking part.

The theme for this year's event is: Be the change: unite for a better Internet.

The children in Years 1 and 2 will be looking at our school's Internet Safety Message 'Lock It, Block It, Show It, Tell It' The messages will be; always check with an adult before going on the Internet and Show an adult if you see something that upsets or worries you online.

The children in Years 3 - 6 will be thinking about what happens to images that get posted online. How they can be shared and cannot be removed if this happens. Also about the dangers of revealing personal information in pictures.

It would be great if you could take time this week to talk about these issues with your child. Most classes will be doing the work on Tuesday, but some may have to do it later in the week.

Why not have a look at the resources on the Safer Internet Page of this Website for helpful links. http://www.newlandsprimary.co.uk/internet-safety/

Also, we are planning a session for parents to learn more about keeping their children safe online. The time and date is still to be confirmed.
