  • Sailing group graduate

    Wed 29 Jun 2016

Over the past four weeks 15 children from Yr 5 have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to try out sailing.

The sessions were run by the Southampton Water Activity Centre (SWAC) based on the River Itchen, next to the Itchen Bridge. They were paid for by Associated British Ports.

Last Tuesday was the final session and the children were presented with their certificates, together with a T shirt from the sponsors.

Some of the children who took part in the sailing are shown below. Everyone had a challenging but rewarding time. What an excellent opportunity. Our thanks to SWAC and ABP.

  • Key Stage 2 Sports Day

    Tue 28 Jun 2016

At last the weather came right for a very successful KS2 Sports Day on Tuesday.

Every year the organisation becomes slicker and every year new records are made. The morning was spent on throwing and jumping events, whilst the afternoon was set aside for children's running events and the parent's javelin throwing competition.

The final part of the day was the certificate presentation. Our thanks to Mr Harris for organising the day, he proved to be the master of the microphone as he compered the afternoon's activities.

Have a look below to see some of the photographs of the day.

  • Queen's 90th birthday celebration

    Mon 27 Jun 2016

We were delighted to see so many families join us for the afternoon to celebrate the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

The sunshine came out, the children had great fun making their kites and the wind blew so that they could fly them!  There was a very long queue for the ice cream van provided by Crowns Ices and we do hope that you all got one in the end.

Mrs Cook and the catering team excelled themselves making scones and cakes for all to enjoy free of charge.  Mrs Broderick made a fabulous photo board with help from Mr West and many people had great fun having their photo taken as the Queen or a corgi.  There were some very interesting facts and letters to the Queen from Year 5 on display and Mr Harris kept things moving with his microphone skills.

Thank you for your donations towards the refreshments and for the support of Peggy's raffle.  You contributed £150 to school funds.

We hope you enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did.  Here are a few photographs.

  • Yr 5 AGT Science Workshop at Oasis Academy

    Sun 26 Jun 2016

On Friday afternoon 8 of our best scientists in Year 5 were invited to Oasis academy to attend a  Federation Science workshop. The event was also attended by children from Redbridge and Fair Isle Schools.

After a safety briefing the children tested different metallic compounds to see what colours they produced.

The second part of the afternoon was a demonstration showing how colours in chemistry could be observed in solutions and in burning liquids.

The children left the event inspired and excited about the idea of continuing their science work.

  • Healthy Eating Week

    Fri 17 Jun 2016
This week has been Healthy Eating Week!  The children have been working hard on healthy challenges every day this week, including:  trying new things, eating 5 fruit and vegetables, drinking plenty and being active!  In class children have been learning about healthy eating and trying new healthy food.  In the dinner hall we have tried flavoured water and melon boats.  Let's try and keep up our healthy eating challenges in the weeks to come!
  • Women in Engineering visit to Leonardo

    Wed 08 Jun 2016

Wednesday  was Women in Engineering day, to mark the occasion local engineering firm Leonardo (Formerly SELEX ES) invited 26 girls from our Year 6 to attend a day of workshops and activities. This is the second year that they have run this day for us, organised by graduate engineer Amy Hearst.

The Smallpeice Trust delivered two practical workshops, in the morning the girls had to make a parachute to deliver a canister holding an egg safely to the ground. In the afternoon, the challenge was to produce a rocket that would gain the greatest height.

The Year 6 girls represented Newlands really well, they were complemented on their behaviour and achieved some great product results. Most of the eggs landed unscathed!

Thank you to Amy and Leonardo for organising this fantastic opportunity.
