  • Subject: Coronavirus Advice for Parents/Carers

    Fri 13 Mar 2020

    Subject: Coronavirus Advice for Parents/Carers

    Dear Parents/Carers

We have not had any suspected or confirmed cases of coronavirus at Newlands so far. If your child is well, there is no reason to be off school.

As I am sure you are aware, the government’s national approach to dealing with the coronavirus outbreak has moved from the “containment” stage to the “delay” stage. As such, the advice for the general public, including schools, has also changed.

What to do if your child falls ill at home:

The most common symptoms of coronavirus are recent onset of a new continuous cough or a high temperature. For most people, these symptoms will be mild. If your child has symptoms of coronavirus infection, however mild, please do the following:

      1.  Keep them at home and do not send them to school for 7 days from the first day of the symptoms.
      2.  Contact the school and let us know that they have these symptoms, and that they will be off for 7 days. This will help us plan.
      3.  The advice from Public Health England, which we urge you to follow, is that they should not leave their house for 7 days from when their symptoms started. If you want more information about what to do if your child falls unwell with symptoms, click here<
https://comms.eschools.co.uk/l/uDSd5zESyKecIYzZ0vx47g/g763e4sycNr892idjvVB8ks2lg/4C9CeMYqLMZgO8l6gkHHcQ> to read the government’s advice.
      4.  After 7 days, if your child feels better and no longer has a high temperature, they can return to school. If they have not had any signs of improvement and you have not already sought medical advice, you should contact NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. A cough may persist for several weeks in some people, despite the coronavirus infection having cleared. A persistent cough alone does not mean your child must continue to self-isolate for more than 7 days.

What to do if your child falls ill at school:

If a child presents these symptoms at school, we will contact you immediately so they can be collected and taken home to start their 7 days.

What to do if your child is well and worried:

It is inevitable there will be some anxiety around this, which is not helped by the media and social media. If your child is hesitant about coming to school, please explain to them that we have enhanced our daily cleaning regime beyond what is advised, that we have no cases, and that we are following all public health advice. If you child is well, there is no reason to be off school. Unless they are ill, or self-isolating due to a sibling being unwell, we have no choice but to mark absence as unauthorised.

What about school trips and activities?

The government has said that school trips abroad are to be cancelled. We have had no advice to cancel any other activities.

What if someone at Newlands gets coronavirus? Will you shut? What about my child’s learning?

At some point, it is possible that someone in the school community will have a confirmed case of coronavirus. If this happens, we will follow the advice from Public Health England for educational settings which can be found here<
https://comms.eschools.co.uk/l/uDSd5zESyKecIYzZ0vx47g/VG1GB5iSWg7UKkoIydppjg/4C9CeMYqLMZgO8l6gkHHcQ> if you are interested in seeing it. It is not automatic that a school closes if someone from the school has a confirmed case. However, we have already begun to look into how we would provide pupils with optional learning opportunities online should the school need to close.

I have other questions and want advice. Where do I go?

If you have any questions or are not sure what any of this means, please contact the school at
info@newlandsprimary.co.uk so we can answer your question. If you want more information about what to do if your child falls unwell with symptoms, click here<https://comms.eschools.co.uk/l/uDSd5zESyKecIYzZ0vx47g/g763e4sycNr892idjvVB8ks2lg/4C9CeMYqLMZgO8l6gkHHcQ> to read the government’s advice.

Thanks very much for your continued support of the school. We will do everything we can to ensure we support the national effort to delay the spread of the virus while minimising the disruption to your child’s education. Your support with following the steps above will much welcomed.

We are making every effort to ensure that school is a safe place for the children and staff at this difficult time. Should the need arise to close the school due to the virus or due to staff shortages, we will contact parents/carers via text message signposting further information on our website, MarvellousMe or on our Facebook page.

  • Newlands celebrate BOOK WEEK

Mon 09 Mar 2020 Mrs Bloomfield

Last week was BOOK WEEK and we had an amazing array of inspirational activities to celebrate reading and books across the school. The week started with a visiting story teller, Pat Ryan, who entertained us all with his workshops.

In classes, we studied a book for the week and transformed our classroom doors with some of our favourite reads.

On Wednesday, we had a Book Swap event and staff were amazed at the range of high quality books that were brought in to swap with others - thank you everyone who supported this.

Thursday was the BIG BOOKY READ. Adults picked stories and books to share with children all around the school.

Friday, we celebrated World Book Day with incredible costumes and sharing stories with other classes across the school.

Well done to everyone for your efforts, your competition entries and your extreme read photos!

  • WORLD BOOK WEEK coming soon!

Tue 25 Feb 2020 Mrs Bloomfield

    Dear Parents/Carers,

NEWLANDS BOOK WEEK: Monday 2nd March – Friday 6th March

It is that exciting time of year again when Newlands gets to go reading crazy and celebrate ‘Newlands’ Book Week’. There will be a variety of events taking place across the school to unite the children in a love for reading.

We have a real treat in store for our children this year, as Patrick Ryan who is a famous children’s storyteller, will be visiting us on Monday 2nd March to share a range of stories with the children across the school.

There will be a ‘Book Swap’ on Wednesday 4th March. If your child has some old books (in good condition) at home that they do not need any more, they can exchange them for up to that number of books at our Book Swap. They will be given a voucher for the number of books they can have, depending on how many they have brought in.

Please could they bring their books for swapping into school by Tuesday 3rd March.

The ‘Share a Story’ will take place on Wednesday 4th March – classes will pair up so children across the school can share books together. If your child has a favourite book they would like to bring in to share this day, they are welcome to do so. (Please make sure it has your child’s name on it).

Dressing up day – On Friday 6th March we would like your child to dress up as their favourite book character.  We are hoping to see lots of imaginative ideas and will be giving prizes to the best costume in each year group.  We have chosen Friday because this is the day for our whole school assembly (so we get to see everyone’s costumes J) and we wanted to end the week by dressing up and celebrating.

    ALSO…..

£1 Book Tokens: Your child will receive a free World Book Day token. When you get your token, all you need to do is take it to your local bookseller and swap it for one of the FIFTEEN exclusive, new and completely FREE World Book Day books.

Extreme Reading Competition: This competition is all about reading in extreme or at least very unusual places! All you have to do is take a photo on your smartphone of your child reading and email them in to the school at info@newlandsprimary.co.uk  for our display during Newlands’ World Book Week. The winners will be announced in assembly at the end of the week. Happy snapping!

Overall, it will be an exciting and rewarding week filled with stories, competitions, dressing up and much more wonderful experiences for the children to ignite their love for books.

  • Newlands becomes a real Legacy School

Mon 03 Feb 2020 Mr Harris

We have some very exciting news to share with you. Newlands Primary School is proud to announce that we are now a real legacy school and one of the first in Hampshire.

real legacy allows us to bring the school, home and the community together to enable cultural change. Our journey commenced with real gym and real PE teacher training to support our PE provision to develop the whole child and will extend across the school to include supporting families and the wider school community.

The school will be supported with teacher training, school-based support, fun real play activities for families, enrichment and competitive opportunities and supporting resources from Create Development all through a holistic approach to develop children's physical, personal, social and emotional skills.

Not only are we on a mission to get our children more active by developing the fundamental physical skills that are so often overlooked, our PE lessons are centred around the child to enable them to be successful in the classroom and in later life.

We look forward to keeping you up to date with our journey to create a new ambition for EVERY child.
