• Giraffes celebrate Youth Options Course

  Giraffes Class (Year 5) have just completed their Bushcraft Course with the Youth Options team. They have learned many survival skills and they shared these with parents today.

  The children were all presented with their certificates for completing the John Muir Discovery Award, a nationally recognised scheme for young people.

  

• Performing Arts Showcase (PAS)

  Key stage two and parents watched the matinee performance of this year's PAS. As ever Mr Harris and his team pulled a wonderful performance out of the hat. We were entertained by excellent singing, dancing, acting and gymnastics. The children are looking forward to the big evening performance tonight.

  

• World Book Day - dressing up day event

  Unfortunately, due to snow in Southampton last Thursday, the World Book Dressing Up event was postponed until today.

  However, staff and pupils enjoyed attending school in a variety of imaginative and colourful costumes.

  The First of March and School was closed due to early morning snow and forecasts of much more to come.

• Severe Weather Update

  Dear Parents and Carers

   

  As promised, I am keeping you up to date about our planned response to the severe weather forecast for the next few days.

   

  For the safety of children, parents and staff the school will remain closed on Friday 2nd March. 

   

  We we hope to be back to school as normal on Monday 5th March, when we will celebrate World Book Day in our book day costumes (postponed from last week!)

   

  Please keep your own eye on the forecast and warnings over the weekend, and watch out for further updates from us.

• Independence Hero - Tommy Carroll

  The whole school learned about Tommy Carroll who despite being blind has mastered the skills needed to skateboard. His dedication, perseverance and ability to work independently has allowed him to develop into an awesome skateboarder!

• Safer Internet Day - Competition

  To prepare for this years SAFER INTERNET DAY on 6th February, Redbridge and Lordshill Federation have a competition for children to enter. Each school will have their own prizes and the overall winner from each school will then be sent to the Federation to be placed on their website.

  Newlands are offering fantastic prizes including; JVC Headphones, books and capacitive pens for touch screen tablets and phones.

• Peace Tree for Christmas

  Have a look at our amazing Christmas Tree with a difference! We have entered the Southampton Christmas Tree Competition and our beautiful Peace Tree will be going on display in the Civic Centre from tomorrow. The tree has been designed by our budding artists as part of our global learning project. Many thanks to Mrs Broderick and Mrs Zampedri for their inspiring work with the children.

  

• Olympic GB Athlete INSPIRES Newlands!

  'We all have choices'

  Newlands were privileged to have a guest speaker at school on Friday 17th November: Aaron Phipps - a member of the London 2012 GB Rugby Wheel chair team. He delivered some fantastic assemblies and workshops for the whole school. Aaron's drive to achieve and persevere in the face of physical obstacles was inspiring not only for the pupils of Newlands, but also for the Staff.  

   

  Aaron held an assembly for Yrs 1,2,3 and 4 during which he explained his unfortunate fight with Meningitis and consequently the lose of his legs and fingertips. Aaron then showed us how this set back made him re-evaluate his life and decide 'We all have choices' sit down and cry or get up and battle on.

   

  Aaron shared with us his journey from 10k races, to marathons, to being invited to try wheel chair rugby, to being selected for the GB Paralympian Team in London and finally climbing/crawling up Mt. Kilimanjaro unaided (when his wheelchair was unable to cope with the rough terrain!)

   

  What a fantastic day and an incredibly inspirational speaker!

  Thanks to everyone who contributed to our collection for Children in Need today. The children looked fantastic with all of their spotty outfits! Mrs Janson has finished counting and we have raised £340!
