  • Her Majesty The Queen

    Fri 09 Sep 2022

It is with sadness that Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

We have had a special whole school assembly to reflect upon and commemorate the life of Her Majesty. Children have also had a chance to share their views and thoughts and to complete other activities in class as well. We were amazed by the knowledge they had to share and the many questions they wanted to ask.

We also know we have an important role to play in reassuring children and young people at this difficult time; as well as celebrating the great service of Queen Elizabeth during her 70 year reign.

Visit the Palace’s website for more information about the mourning period: www.royal.uk.

School will be closed on Monday 19th September as a mark of respect and to enable children to be with their families on this sad and historic occasion.

  • Update from OWLS - Resource Base for Deaf Children at Newlands

Wed 20 Jul 2022 Miss Weaver

    July 2022

It’s a been a term of journeys and adventures for the Owls.

First our KS2 children made an epic trip to Brighton to visit Hamilton Lodge School for the Deaf. It was amazing to meet deaf children and teachers who use BSL as their first language. Pupils come home at weekends but sleep in houses near the school during the week so it was exciting to see how different (yet equally welcoming) school can be.

Next, the Owls class visited Adventure Wonderland with funding from the charity Chloe and Sophie’s Special Ears Fund. This was a reward for our huge team effort in creating a base from scratch and a chance to develop links between our deaf children who are spread across different year groups in the school. We were also joined by our linked Speech and Language Therapist who spent the day ticking off targets achieved when the children chattered about their experiences. It was one hot but very happy day.

Meanwhile, the Resource Base journey continues in September when we will officially OPEN. Two children will be moving into Year 3 from Tanners Brook, where the provision ends this term. We also welcome Mrs Pascoe as a full time Teacher of the Deaf in training. This means we now have nine children and a team of seven adults – with more joining very soon.

Please note the transport times for the Resource Base children starting from Monday 5th September; 8.20am drop-off to breakfast club and 3.00pm collection from the Owls gate.

I’d like to end this update with some feedback from a recent visitor to Owls. I couldn’t be prouder of what Team Newlands has achieved so far. Thank you!

I was blown away by the depth of humanity, compassion, respect and patience you and the team show the students. And the amount of people using BSL. They are sooooo good. It was all outstanding.”

  • Superb Sports Day

Fri 08 Jul 2022 Mr Harris

    SUN SHINES ON SPORTS DAY!

A sea of coloured t-shirts and large smiles could be seen across the Sports field on Friday 1st July. The Newlands annual (though not recently) Sports Day was underway.

Pupils from all years came together as one to jump and throw as far as they could, to sprint the quickest and to support each other to do their best. Shouts of joy and words of encouragement filled the air.

The magic of sports day weaved its way around the field from morning to afternoon. Culminating in the parents Javelin event which this year was won by Mr Butt (Mens) and Mrs Blake (Womens), and quickly followed by our very competitive Year Group Race Finals!

Pupils would have found out this week who won the different events for their year groups and received their Sports Day WINNERS certificate. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WINNERS!

The WINNER of Sports Day 2022 were: CELERITAS 2 – Miss Chitson and Mrs M Clarke

The OVERALL HOUSE SPORTS DAY RESULTS:

    4th: 265pts Audacia (RED)

    3rd: 276pts Virtus (BLUE)

    2nd: 277pts Celeritas (YELLOW)
