World Book Day Assembly ends a fantastic Book Week at Newlands!

Newlands finished off a fantastic week of book inspired activities, with a World Book Day Celebration Assembly. Congratulations to all our Book Character Dress up competition winners.

It is that exciting time of year again where Newlands gets to go reading mad and celebrate ‘Book Week’. As part of our drive to raise standards in writing through a passion for reading, the children will be taking part in a variety of exciting events to develop a pleasure for reading and writing.

Book Week Launch- Monday 27^th February- Children will bring home their Book Week voucher.

Famous children’s illustrator Korky Paul will be coming in to school to show the children how he illustrates books, sharing some of his stories and giving them an insight into being an illustrator. This will be on Wednesday 1^st March.

This year we would like to invite parents/carers to come into school and ‘Share a story’ with their children.

Yr R, 1 & 2- Tuesday 28th February at 2.55pm

Yr 5 Thursday 2nd March at 8.55am

Yrs 3, 4 & 6 2nd March at 2.55pm

Dressing up Day – On Friday 3rd March we would like your child to dress up as their favourite book character. We are hoping to see lots of imaginative ideas and will be giving prizes to the best costume in each year group.

The week will be a busy one, set to be full of wonderful experiences and opportunities for all the children. Keep your eyes peeled on the school website for lots of photos.

BUILDING WORKS AT NEWLANDS PRIMARY

Exciting times lay ahead for us at Newlands as the long anticipated building project for the Resource Base for Deaf Children finally got started! The building works will involve an extension to our Key Stage 2 wing of the school.

During the half term break, the builders moved onto site and set up an enormous building site compound. The site is fenced off to keep us all safe whilst the building works take place between now and December.

The main access/exit for parents to pick up children from classes in YR/1/2/and 3 will be via the Key Stage 1 gates and pathways. Please be aware that there is likely to be more people traffic than usual on the paths around Key Stage 1 and the Quiet area. To help us out, please be patient and try to send only one parent onto site to pick up children.

Pathway closed!

There is no through access on the external pathway around the Key Stage 2 part of the building and no woodchip path to the playground. Year 4 and 5 classrooms and the temporary RBD (Owls Base) can still be accessed by the Key Stage 2 gate but you cannot follow the pathway around the school as it is blocked off!

Year 6 will be using the external door by the minibus parking area to get out to the Key Stage 2 gate.

We will regularly review the arrangements during the build project and update you with any changes etc.

In the meantime, please be patient at pick up times and respectful to staff who will signpost the way!

Global Ambassadors & School of Sanctuary

A couple of updates from our Global Learning & School of Sanctuary Lead:

First of all, a big thank you for the donations from the Christmas Concerts by parents and staff which raised £135. This was split between 3 refugee charities, SWVG (which supports refugees and asylum seekers in Southampton), Hope School in Jordan and Safe Passage (both of which support child refugees across the globe).

We have also announced our Global Ambassadors for this year - one representative for each KS2 class and an additional representative from Year 6 who will represent KS1. They will work with staff to support our renewal of our School of Sanctuary accreditation. Their first task will be to complete the creation of Welcome booklets, which will be given to all new members of the Newlands School community (staff and pupils).

Bridge Trust Consultation Presentation

On Tuesday this week, we held a meeting with our schools’ communities as part of the consultation process regarding our proposed move to Foundation (Cooperative) Trust status. During the meeting there were some questions, which may be answered by sharing a copy of the presentation we used during the meeting with every parent and family in all our schools.

BRIDGE EDUCATION TRUST (Southampton) Consultation

Over the past few months, following a discussion with Southampton City Council about further cementing our relationship with some of the schools in the Redbridge and Lordshill Primary Federation, we have investigated different ways to plan for the long-term futures of our schools and we have decided to consult with our school communities on forming a Cooperative Trust together.

As a Trust, our aims would be to:

● Provide the best possible education for the communities we serve, in turn create a learning setting that is focused on giving pupils an outstanding educational environment and promoting positive outcomes for all.

● Work together to share ideas, enhance leadership expertise, promote best practice, offer cross-school curricular and sporting opportunities, whilst allowing each school to maintain what makes it special.

Being a Cooperative Trust school would mean that we would continue to work very closely with colleagues at the Local Authority (Southampton City Council), but for our children and staff, there would be no difference on a day to day basis. Our governing body would continue to provide strategy and direction to our school, the Headteachers and Chairs of Governors would come together as a Board of Trustees and we would also form a Trust Forum that would consist of representatives from our learners, parents, staff, partners and other stakeholders that would reflect issues and opportunities across our communities.

The Cooperative Trust would be a not for profit charitable organisation. We would adopt and support the values and principles of the Cooperative movement in our work: all Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. Cooperative members also believe in honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

This notice marks the beginning of our period of consultation, which runs for four weeks from Thursday 5^th January. We are also consulting with learners at our school; teachers and support staff; teacher associations and trade unions representing school staff; local schools which might be affected by or interested in the proposals; our Local Authority; Southampton City Council as well as local MPs and elected local councillors.

Further details can be found in the three links below, which consist of a letter to parents, staff and other stakeholders of our school, a summary of the consultation and a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about cooperative trust schools. In the summary of the consultation is a link to a Google form which you can complete to respond to the consultation, and an invitation to a Zoom virtual meeting for parents, which will take place on Tuesday, 10^th January at 2.00pm.

UK Health Security Agency Information on Scarlet Fever

Dr Robin Poole, Consultant in Public Health at Southampton City Council has asked all schools to share the following information letter with parents/carers regarding increased reported cases of Scarlet Fever nationally.
